Medical Scientist Earnings

The median annual wage for medical scientists was $79,930 in May 2014. The median wage is the wage at which half the workers in an occupation earned more than that amount and half earned less. The lowest 10 percent earned less than $43,150, and the highest 10 percent earned more than $148,210.

Median annual wages in the industries employing the largest numbers of medical scientists in May 2014 were as follows:

  • Pharmaceutical and medicine manufacturing: $102,400
  • Research and development in the physical, engineering, and life sciences: 92,770
  • Medical and diagnostic laboratories: 82,700
  • Hospitals; state, local, and private: 73,590
  • Colleges, universities, and professional schools; state, local, and private: 58,140

Most medical scientists work full time.
