State Nursing Boards

State Boards of Nursing (BONs) are regulatory bodies established in every U.S. state with the primary purpose of protecting public health and welfare by overseeing the safe practice of nursing. This is achieved through the critical function of licensing Registered Nurses (RNs), Licensed Vocational/Practical Nurses (LVNs/LPNs), and Advanced Practice Registered Nurses (APRNs). The boards ensure entry-level competence by setting educational standards, approving nursing programs, and requiring candidates to pass the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX).
