Hospital Job Outlook

With 13.1 million wage and salary workers in 2004, healthcare is the largest job sector in the US economy according to the U.S. Department of Labor's Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS).  And with over 5.3 million employees in 2004, hospitals are the biggest employers within healthcare.  The BLS projects that hospital employment will grow to nearly 6 million employees by 2014 as demographic trends and technological advancements spur continued growth in healthcare services in general.  Hospitals are major employers of registered nurses and a wide variety of other skilled healthcare professionals (see table below).  While many avenues exist for pursuing hospital employment opportunities, remember to check out online listings from the hospitals themselves for the most timely, up-to-date information.
